In the scandal around the former Leipzig head center, the legal arguments are spit. According to the MDR the former managing director and ENT specialist, Prof. Gero Strauß, received a penalty order over 150 daily rates of 15 euros each. However, this is not final because Strauss appealed. Therefore, the case is being negotiated publicly and a new date has not yet been determined. The process before the Leipzig district court concerns fraud and infidelity allegations in large numbers.

The allegations against Strauss include suspected fraud in seven cases and infidelity in 57 cases. He is said to have deceived investors in order to receive funds for non -planned practice and have used funds from the companies represented for private purposes. The damage incurred is estimated at around 1.6 million euros. In addition, there are also accusations of the false insurance on oaths. Strauss is accused of having given false information to the tax office as part of asset information.

Expansion of the investigation

Like from Lab News the public prosecutor Leipzig has increased the number of accused in connection with the head center scandal to 14. In addition to Prof. Strauß, this also includes other doctors and commercial employees. The investigation began in October 2022 with a large -scale raid, in which around 300 civil servants searched practice rooms, business offices and private apartments. As a result, extensive evidence was ensured, including business documents and electronic devices.

The allegations are extremely serious and not only affect financial fraud, but also billing fraud and bodily harm caused by incorrect operations. Reports on rough treatment errors, especially in children, led to compensation for pain and suffering against the clinic. It is indicated that Prof. Strauß and his surroundings may have followed a systematic approach to deceive patients and investors.

Consequences for the practices and the company

After the raids and the allegations, Strauß ’company finally broke, but some practices in Leipzig were saved. The Leipzig University Hospital took over the saved practices and now operates them as a medical care center. The company concerned received 50 employees of the company, which led to a significant loss of jobs. The scandal has also disclosed and illuminated profound system weaknesses in the German healthcare sector which gaps exist in supervision and control.

Prof. Strauß spent a total of 142 days in custody that was imposed due to the risk of escape. This imprisonment lasted from November to December 2023 and from February to June 2024. The trial against him for fraud, infidelity and embezzlement is still pending, and new charges could follow in the course of further investigations. The case will continue to be an important topic for the public in the future.
