New Nahlesteg in Leipzig: Pedestrians and cyclists are happy!

The city of Leipzig recently opened the new bridge on Nahlesteg in the northern Auwald to cyclists and pedestrians. This central path connection was newly built as part of the renovation of the Heuweg and enables an unhindered flow of the river because the construction is pillarless. Mayor Thomas Dienberg emphasized the climate protection aspect of the construction and emphasized that no trees were felled in the riparian forest during the entire project. This measure shows the city's commitment to nature and species protection, after all, the construction area is located in a landscape protection, bird protection and FFH area.

Construction of the new crossing began in October 2023. During the construction period, cyclists and pedestrians were guided one-way over a temporary bridge. This temporary bridge is to be removed in the coming weeks, probably by mid-August 2024. The total costs for the new Nahlesteg amount to 5.2 million euros, of which 2.25 million euros come from the National Climate Protection Initiative of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection. The project was initially delayed by various challenges, including delivery problems with the steel structure related to the Ukraine War.

Technical details and challenges

The new bridge is a single-span steel arch structure with a span of 50 meters and an arch span of 5.50 meters. Thanks to its width of four meters, it enables safe encounters between cyclists and pedestrians. However, the construction of the Nahlesteg had to be temporarily interrupted during the fishing season until June 30, 2024, which further delayed completion. In particular, the use of two special cranes in mid-April was necessary to lift heavy bridge segments weighing between 25 and 27 tons, which posed a logistical challenge.

With the completion of the Nahlesteg, the main cycle path connection within the community between Möckern and Leutzsch will be significantly upgraded. The city of Leipzig was therefore not only able to create an important traffic artery, but also take into account the aspect of climate protection, which is of great importance today.
