New Nahlesteg in Leipzig: Pedestrians and cyclists are happy!

Leipzig, Deutschland - The city of Leipzig recently released the new bridge on the Nahlesteg in the northern Auwald for cyclists and pedestrians. This central path connection was rebuilt as part of the renovation of the hay and enables a unhindered river flow, since the construction is pillarless. Mayor Thomas Dienberg underlined the climate protection aspect in construction and emphasized that there were no trees in the Auwald during the entire project. This measure shows the city's commitment to nature and species protection, after all, the construction area is located in a landscape protection, bird protection and FFH area.

The construction of the new crossing began in October 2023. During the construction period, cyclists and pedestrians were one -sided via a makeshift bridge. This makeshift bridge is to be removed in the coming weeks, probably by mid -August 2024. The total costs for the new Nahlesteg amount to 5.2 million euros, with 2.25 million euros from the national climate protection initiative of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection. The project was initially delayed by various challenges, including delivery problems with the steel structure that were related to the Ukraine War.

technical details and challenges

The new bridge is a single -line steel arch construction with a span of 50 meters and an arching stitch of 5.50 meters. With its width of four meters, it enables safe encounter between cyclists and pedestrians. However, the construction of the Nahlesteg had to be temporarily interrupted during the fish shon period until June 30, 2024, which also delayed the completion. In particular, the use of two special cranes in mid -April was necessary to raise heavy bridge segments with weights between 25 and 27 tons, which was a logistical challenge.

With the completion of the Nahlesteg, the internal main cycle path connection between Möckern and Leutzsch is significantly upgraded. The city of Leipzig was therefore not only able to create an important traffic artery, but also take into account the aspect of climate protection, which is of great importance in today's world.
