Security for students: New traffic measures around Barnet-Licht-Platz

In an endeavor to increase traffic safety for schoolchildren, the city of Leipzig has decided significant measures in the area of the high school on Barnet-Licht-Platz. According to a report of the Leipziger Internet Zeitung a conversion of the traffic lights at the intersection of Praguestrasse/Kregelstraße is carried out. In order to increase the safety of the students, the Tempo 30 regulation on Prague Strasse is expanded.

Construction work begins on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, and is expected to be completed by the end of October. The total costs for the measures amount to around 265,000 euros. A construction site traffic light is set up during the work because the existing stationary traffic light is switched off.

Comprehensive security measures

As part of the renovation, the pedestrian festival is widened from 5 to 7 meters at the said intersection. All overweights are equipped with blind spots, and the traffic light receives corresponding signal tones to ensure accessibility. This corresponds to the provisions of the updated road traffic regulations, which came into force in 2024 and facilitates cities and municipalities to take measures to improve traffic safety.

As the ADAC reports, the reforms in the Road Traffic Act have expanded the powers of municipalities, which allows them to introduce Tempo 30 zones near schools and kindergartens more effectively. These regulations support the city of Leipzig to significantly reduce the accident risks for pupils, pedestrians and cyclists.

Further advantages of the reform

The adjustments in the Road Traffic Act enable the municipal traffic authorities not only to define speed 30 routes, but also to implement bus traces, bike paths and pedestrian areas more easily. The new regulations also promote the consideration of climate and environmental protection and urban development.
The road traffic regulations even enable the connection of Tempo 30 lines if the distance is a maximum of 500 meters, which facilitates a continuous speed limit along busy school routes.

The measures in Leipzig are therefore not only a step to improve school security, but also an example of the implementation of the new legal framework that is focused on the safety of traffic.
