Pipe break provides chaos: 10,000 households in Leipzig without water!

On September 24, 2025, a considerable incident occurred in Leipzig when a main water pipe broke in the old Salzstrasse. This fracture of the pipe led to massive floods in the west of the city and in the adjacent Markranstädt. Around 10,000 households were temporarily without water supply, a fact that affected numerous residents and facilities. The affected school buildings, in particular the Arwed-Rossbach School, had to be closed for security reasons, such as Tag24 reported.

After the first reports, the waterworks employees went to Lausen, Grünau and Markranstädt at 9:30 a.m. At this point it was already clear that there had been major problems in the old Salzstraße because a large hole was formed and the adjacent park was flooded. At 11 a.m., the technicians managed to reduce the water by sliding and restore the care, explains the Leipziger Volkszeitung.

Repair work underway

The repair of the damaged pipe is already underway, but is expected to take a few days. Although the water pipe can be repaired even in the coming hours, the restoration of the asphalt surfaces and other affected areas will take significantly longer. A construction site barrier will be expected in the next few days to ensure the safety precautions.

Technicians and firefighters were also on site in the afternoon of the incident to support the repair. Fortunately, thanks to their quick reactions, an expansion of the damage could be avoided. No other affected schools have been known so far, but lessons in the Arwed-Rossbach school have been announced for Wednesday as soon as the water supply is stabilized.

Overall, the situation remains tense because the water that flows into the park is supposed to seep away according to the information from the waterworks. The residents and the city administration must now wait and see how the situation will develop and what further steps are necessary to restore the infrastructure.
