On Thursday, the police in Leipzig took two children who had been missing for a long time into custody. The seven-year-old boy and the eight-year-old girl were discovered in a vehicle by the Special Commission on Right-Wing Extremism (Soko Rex) and employees of the youth welfare office. The children were then handed over to the youth welfare office of the city of Leipzig after their mother, a 45-year-old, remains at large.
The mother is said to have removed the children from state custody in 2023 and hidden them in an unknown location. The Leipzig district court had temporarily withdrawn sole custody from the mother and transferred guardianship to an association. Despite a court order to release them, the children could not be found for a long time because the mother and children were in hiding. It was not until spring 2025 that the city of Leipzig filed a criminal complaint against the mother, after which Soko Rex took over the investigation on suspicion of kidnapping minors.
Background to the investigation
Mother and those around her are suspected of belonging to the Reich citizen and self-governing scene. It is suspected that they tried to permanently deprive the children of state supervision, medical care and school attendance. Before the investigators got hold of them, there was increasing evidence that the children were in a residential area in Leipzig. When discovered, the children were found unharmed at a property, but in the company of several adults who were also nearby.
The investigators had surrounded the property and were able to successfully approach the children and hand them over to the responsibility of the youth welfare office. The investigation is ongoing to clarify further details about the circumstances and background to the withdrawal. The Soko Rex of the Saxony State Criminal Police Office has taken on a central role in further investigating the case and the connection to the Reich citizen scene.
A police spokesman emphasized that the safety of the children was now the top priority.
