Major police operation in the Burgenland district: 1.3 million euros of drugs seized!

Today, July 14, 2025, a large-scale police operation against a suspected drug ring took place in Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt. This long-awaited action included the search of 26 properties, 21 of which were in the Burgenland district. During these searches, police seized a staggering 6kg of crystal meth, 70kg of marijuana, several kilograms of cocaine and 1kg of ecstasy. The total value of illegal drugs is estimated at around 1.3 million euros, making this operation one of the biggest successes in the fight against drugs in the last three years FAZEmag reported.

In addition to the drug confiscations, several thousand euros in cash, various weapons such as blank pistols and knives as well as illegal pyrotechnics were also seized. Two high-value vehicles were seized in the operation. In total, the police temporarily arrested six men between the ages of 25 and 36; five of them are now in custody, while one has been released. Four of those arrested come from Weißenfels, two from the Leipzig area. It is interesting to note that most of those arrested are already known to law enforcement.

Cooperation between police authorities

The successful search was carried out in cooperation with the Halle police station, the Saxony police, the state riot police and the Saxony-Anhalt State Criminal Police Office. This cross-border cooperation indicates a high risk situation, which is manifested in the region around Leipzig and the Burgenland district. According to police, the region has become a drug trafficking hotspot for years.

The danger of crystal meth, which is one of the most dangerous synthetic drugs in Europe, is undisputed. Consumption can have serious physical and psychological consequences. The production of these drugs usually takes place in illegal laboratories in Eastern Europe, while distribution is organized via regional networks in Germany.

Research projects on crystal meth in Saxony

In the context of the drug problem in Saxony, the research project “Crystal Meth in Saxony” was carried out by the Saxon Institute for Police and Security Research (SIPS) from 2019 to 2023. The aim of this project was to investigate the phenomenology and background of methamphetamine consumption in Saxony. The methodological approaches included a bright field analysis that compiled data from police crime statistics and other sources, as well as qualitative interviews with those affected and specialists from medical and therapeutic facilities.

The results of this comprehensive research project provide valuable insights into the problem of crystal meth consumption in Saxony and offer recommendations for future drug control and prevention. These scientific findings are essential to effectively understand the situation in the region and act accordingly Saxony Police determines.
