Leipzig's citizens protest: Planning the substation on sports field!
In the Leipzig district of Stötteritz there is resistance to the planned construction of a substation that is to be built on the lawn of the “General Gymnastics Association for Leipzig” (ATV 1845). The construction project, which is scheduled to begin in 2026, comes across strong concerns from the residents and the Southeast Council Advisory Board (SBB). These require an alternative location. The topic is also dealt with at the Agenda of the Leipzig Council meeting, where the concerns about the sealing of green and sports areas in Leipzig can be heard. [TAG24] (https://www.tag24.de/leipzig/lokales/high-voltage-in-leipzig-buerger-Wehren-Sich- against Grosses-auf-Sportplatz-3422669-AM) reports that the access to the transition from Naunhofer Straße and parallel to the Paulinerweg should take place.
The planned precipitation of eight linden trees that are located in a nature reserve is particularly controversial. The SBB has clearly expressed that they want to prevent further sealing of environmentally friendly areas. They therefore call for the suspension of the plans for the location in favor of alternative locations. Garage courtyards are preferred in the streets of Schlesier, Holzhäuser, Ludolf-Colditz and Augustiner or a former cemetery nursery on Prague Strasse.
Investments and requirements for the infrastructure
The investment amount for the substation is estimated at around 32 million euros. There could be reasonable compensation for the garage owners concerned. Frank Viereckl, the press spokesman for the Leipzig Stadtwerke, sees the ATV location as the best option. He emphasizes that Leipzig is expected to need seven new substation by 2040 to cover the increasing electricity requirement. The existing facilities in Thonberg and Lößnig are already overloaded.
However, Viereckl warns that the failure of the ATV location would lead to delays from one and a half to two years. Alternatively, a garage tenant has proposed the possibility of installing the substation on a gravel wastery next to Prague Straße. The residents express a variety of concerns, especially with regard to nature conservation and the possible negative effects on the environment.
Overall, the resistance to the substation in Stötteritz seems to be larger, while the need for new infrastructure in Leipzig is undeniable. The discussion about alternative locations will continue to be dealt with in the city's political bodies in the coming weeks and months.
