New bike path between BMW plant and Hohenheida: Construction begins now!
In Leipzig, the construction of a new walking and cycle path between the BMW plant in Seehausen and Hohenheida is imminent. The work begins by information from LVZ On September 22, 2025. This new cycle path is part of a project that is intended to improve not only the transport connection, but also the environmental quality in the region.
First, the side room is cleared and examined for possibly existing ordnance, a measure that is indispensable in the construction preparation. At the same time, a new drinking water pipe will be laid to optimize the water supply from Hohenheida. The city of Leipzig plans to largely build the bike path in the side room, so that the street remains navigable for the time being.
Details on the construction process
The construction takes place in several phases. In the second construction phase, a crossing aid is built in Hohenheida, which shortens the crossing for pedestrians and increases security. The condition of the road is overhauled and new guardrails are set up. In addition, it is planned to plant a total of 18 new trees during the construction work and to seal no longer needed road surfaces. The latter measure contributes to improving environmental quality, as well as L-IR emphasized.
During the construction period, the road between the BMW site and Hohenheida is completely blocked. Drivers have to dodge via Göbschelwitz; Bus line 82 is diverted via Merkwitz during this phase. Information on current changes is provided both online and at the stops. The exact dates for the full closure are currently still open.
Financing and completion
The total costs of the project amount to almost one million euros, of which the city of Leipzig takes over around half. Further funds come from the household of the Saxon state parliament. The completion of the construction work and thus the completion of the new cycle path are planned for February 2026, report both LVZ as well as L-IR.
