Clean river, safe streets: Leipzig's Volbedingstrasse renewed!

In Leipzig, intensive work is currently being done on Volbedingstrasse between Mockauer Strasse and Wenckstrasse. The expansion, which has already been underway for a year, is expected to be completed by June 2026. The total costs of the project amount to around 29 million euros, of which around 8 million euros come from funding. The aim of the measures is to both improve the infrastructure and implement environmentally friendly solutions. The work includes the renewal of the tracks, the repair of a bridge over the Parthe and the barrier-free conversion of the “Schönefeld, Volbedingstrasse” stop.

A central aspect of the construction work is improving road safety. In parallel to these measures, the Leipzig waterworks are investing around 10 million euros in the renovation of the drinking water and wastewater systems. As part of this work, two new storm overflow structures are being built in Volbedingstrasse and Zeumerstrasse. These structures will be equipped with new tubes made of glass fiber reinforced plastic (GRP) with a diameter of 2.40 meters. This innovation enables the effective filtration of coarse and suspended matter from the mixed water, especially during heavy rain events.

Environmentally friendly solutions

Project manager Susanne Jeschke emphasizes that environmental protection is given high priority by the new systems. She appeals to the population to be careful not to dispose of any garbage into the wastewater in order to maintain the quality of the water in the Parthe. In dry weather, the wastewater is sent directly to the sewage treatment plant, while a horizontal screen takes over the function of the screen tubes in the Zeumerstrasse rain overflow structure. The “Amiscreen” system is new and does not require an external power supply to clean the screen tubes.

The civil engineering work on Volbedingstrasse and Zeumerstrasse is expected to be completed by the end of October 2025. The section from Mockauer Straße to the Berthastraße intersection is currently being opened to local traffic, while remaining work on the sidewalk area is still taking place. The next construction phase on Volbedingstrasse includes the dismantling of the track and important pipeline work regarding drinking water, power supply and wastewater disposal. At the same time, track construction work begins between the Zeumerstraße and Wenckstraße intersections.

Overall, it can be seen that the comprehensive construction measures are not only aimed at modernizing transport routes, but also actively contribute to improving water supply and quality in Leipzig. Those interested can find further information about the work on the website LVZ and L.de.
