Leipzig Airport cancels Tirana flights: What's behind it?

Leipzig Airport is experiencing high levels of activity during the holiday season and at the same time announces important changes to its winter flight schedule. From November 1, 2025, the direct connection to Tirana, the capital of Albania, will no longer be offered. This connection was previously served by the airline WizzAir, which only started the route on September 30, 2024. The decision to cancel flights raises questions, especially as the exact reasons for this remain unclear and speculation is rife about low demand.

Tirana is known for its impressive buildings that combine Ottoman, Italian and communist architecture. Despite the cancellation of this connection, Leipzig Airport offers a variety of other destinations, which include popular locations such as Mallorca, Fuerteventura, Corfu, Istanbul, Hurghada, Faro and London. This continues to allow travelers numerous options for their vacation.

Flight connections and changes

In addition to the cancellations in the winter flight schedule, Leipzig/Halle Airport has also announced new flight destinations. Since May, SunExpress has been flying to Varna and Burgas in Bulgaria in collaboration with Electra Airways. These connections continue to exist. Even if flights to Tirana are paused in winter, the route to Bucharest in Romania remains in the flight schedule and will not be affected.

The utilization of the connection to Tirana was very good at almost 90% in October 2024, but fell to only 62.2% in January 2025. WizzAir has already announced that the connection to Tirana will again be flown three times a week from the summer timetable of 2026. WizzAir has not yet been able to answer the exact reasons for the temporary suspension of flights.

Overall, it can be seen that Leipzig Airport is continuously developing to meet the needs of travelers, while at the same time adjustments to the flight schedule are necessary in order to remain economical. However, there are still many attractive destinations available to passengers for future trips.
