A lot is happening again in the heart of Dresden: the dismantling of the Carola Bridge has been largely completed, which is pleasing to the city and its citizens. As the City administration reports, an important step has been taken to restore the infrastructure on the Terrassenufer and along the Elbe. Hentschke Bau GmbH has already started renovating the areas and traffic routes.
The shipping channel was provisionally opened on August 15, 2025, which represents a noticeable relief for residents and road users. The final sounding work and the sounding of the Elbe bottom are planned by August 22, 2025. And don't worry, the Terrassenufer should be accessible again by mid-September 2025 - that won't be long away!
Planned measures in detail
The city has already prepared what damage to footpaths, stairs, parking and traffic areas needs to be taken into account. From the end of August 2025, things will get serious: asphalt will be installed on the road so that the cycle paths also have safe markings again. New curbs and granite slabs will be used on the footpaths, which will add additional freshness to the overall appearance.
Another highlight: The cycle path on the Neustädter Elbe side will be opened after the film nights at the end of August. The section of the Elbe cycle path should be usable until mid-October 2025 - a real benefit for all cyclists and those seeking relaxation. What a stroke of luck!
New construction of the Carola Bridge
In June 2025, the city council made a fundamental decision to rebuild the Carola Bridge. Great attention was paid to ensuring that the new replacement building blends harmoniously into the surrounding area and meets traffic requirements. As the City administration further states, the accompanying committee will meet on August 22, 2025 to deal with the tender documents for the planning of the bridge.
These documents are scheduled to be published on September 4, 2025 and offers can be submitted until early October 2025. The planning contract is expected to be awarded at the beginning of December 2025, with four offices being commissioned to develop concrete designs. The presentation of these drafts is scheduled for May 2026, followed by a public discussion.
Construction of the new Carola Bridge is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2028, with completion in 2031. STESAD GmbH will accompany and manage the award process - so it will be interesting to see how the situation at this important location will develop over the coming years!
