Lung Cancer Center at UKL receives important certification for quality!

The Lung Cancer Center at Leipzig University Hospital (UKL) has successfully received its certificate from the German Cancer Society (DKG). This first-ever certification certifies the high quality of diagnostics and treatment for lung cancer, which is one of the most common cancers in Germany. Around 57,500 people are diagnosed with lung cancer every year, with men being affected more often than women. The main risk factor remains smoking, and the disease is often diagnosed late, making treatment much more difficult. Prof. Matthias Steinert, head of thoracic surgery at UKL, highlights the advances in diagnostics and therapy, which offer new treatment options for advanced tumors. According to l-iz.de, the DKG audit was completed without comments and the center received a very positive overall impression.

Interdisciplinary collaboration is an important part of medical care at UKL. Thoracic surgeons, pulmonologists, radiologists, radiation oncologists, nuclear medicine specialists, pathologists and oncologists work hand in hand to optimize lung cancer treatment. Prof. Hubert Wirtz, Head of Pulmonology, is pleased about the confirmation of the joint efforts focused on the patients. The center's success is also based on compliance with minimum case numbers, with over 200 primary tumor cases and 75 surgical resections last year.

Expansion of the supply offer

The University Cancer Center (UCCL) at UKL has also been certified as an “Oncology Centre”, making the hospital the only cancer center in the region with this quality certificate. The certification was achieved through detailed examination of 25 disciplines involved in cancer treatment. This included not only interdisciplinary diagnostics and therapy, but also patient care and the use of modern procedures. Apparently the UKL met the DKG's strict assessment criteria, with treatment results, complications and relapse rates being analyzed. The entire process emphasized the high quality of work, including the areas of pathology, imaging, surgery, nursing and physiotherapy. This information can be found in the reporting from management-klinikum.de.

In addition, the range of specialized centers at UKL was expanded before certification. In addition to the established organ cancer centers such as the skin tumor center and prostate cancer center, these now also include new facilities such as the neuro-oncology center, gynecological cancer center, head and neck tumor center and a focus on gastrointestinal tumors. These expansions offer patients comprehensive care and innovative treatment approaches, while close collaboration with regional hospitals and practices ensures care close to home.

Patients benefit from access to the latest technologies and studies, which are quickly integrated into diagnostics and therapy. The UKL radiology and pulmonology team is also ready to introduce a screening program for the early detection of lung cancer. According to Prof. Florian Lordick, head of the University Cancer Center, the certification represents an important addition to the range of services and confirms the quality of care that patients receive at UKL.
