Gymnastics festival in Leipzig: Tens of thousands of overnight guests create a great atmosphere!

Ascension morning in Leipzig brings with it an exuberant atmosphere as tens of thousands of participants travel to the city for the big gymnastics festival. Many of the athletes find accommodation in the local schools to prepare for the upcoming competitions. Anke Geissbühler (57) and Heike Blüme (53) from MTV Sodersdorf report on their relaxing night in the school cafeteria at Palmengarten, where they were able to spend the night.

A total of over 400 people, mainly from marching bands, are accommodated in the school at Palmengarten. There, sleeping accommodations were set up in gymnasiums and classrooms, with towels, camp beds, mattresses and even a bouncy castle provided. However, Ruth Rywak from the Surheide gymnastics and sports club complains about difficulties with air mattresses and little sleep.

Accommodation and meals

One of the marching bands, “Deutsche Eiche” from Brandenburg, has enough space in the gymnasium. Students from the Palmengarten school actively help with making breakfast and coffee, working together with around 50 others. Over 200 gymnasts from Baden-Württemberg are accommodated in the Großzschocher primary school, but the sanitary conditions leave a lot to be desired - there are only three showers.

However, the mood in the elementary school cafeteria is positive. The last group of gymnasts from TB Wilferdingen expressed their satisfaction. Volunteers from the Triton rowing club also contribute to the good atmosphere by organizing the morning meals and planning to use the funds collected to buy a new rowing boat.

Rules and infrastructure

As part of the gymnastics festival, strict rules apply to all accommodation, including a general ban on alcohol and smoking on the entire school grounds. The current school house rules are posted at the entrance and are automatically accepted upon entry. Showers are set up in attached school sports halls as well as in additional shower containers, and participants are encouraged to also use the showers at the event locations.

There are information boards in all community quarters that provide important information, including contact details of helpers and contact persons who are available to answer questions during the event period. In addition, the rooms must be left in a swept-clean condition when the clubs leave them to ensure that everything runs smoothly. This all shows how well organized the event is and how much the city of Leipzig has prepared for the athletes.

The anticipation for the upcoming competitions is palpable and the participants are ready to make the most of their stay under the banner of the gymnastics festival. The hosts in Leipzig strive to offer the athletes a pleasant and exciting experience.
