Schwäbisch Gmünd becomes a hydrogen stronghold: 10 MW plant starts!

On October 14, 2025, Schwäbisch Gmünd took a significant step towards sustainable energy supply. The production of green hydrogen will start here with the commissioning of a 10-megawatt electrolyser. This project is not only groundbreaking for the region, but also a crucial part of the nationwide effort to promote renewable energy.

Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann, who praised the test operation of the hydrogen factory, underlined the importance of this initiative for Baden-Württemberg. Among those present at the inauguration were Mayor Richard Arnold, Environment Minister Thekla Walker and the CEO of Lhyfe, Matthieu Guesné. Together with District Administrator Joachim Bläse, they celebrated the starting signal for this innovative technology. A photo by Theo Westermann documents this important event.

Hydrogen production details

The new electrolyser is powered by green electricity from hydro, wind and solar power plants. In total, the plant will produce hydrogen on an area of around 10,000 m². It is estimated that up to 4 tonnes of green hydrogen are produced daily and around 1000 tonnes annually. The project will be partially opened to the public in the “H2-Aspen” hydrogen technology park and at a JetH2 hydrogen filling station in Schwäbisch Gmünd.

It is also notable that this is Lhyfe's first project of this scale outside of France. The French hydrogen producer already has experience with large-scale installations, including the first large-scale hydrogen plant connected to a wind farm, which was inaugurated in France in 2021. In 2022, Lhyfe even opened the world's first offshore platform for producing green hydrogen.

Promotion and goal setting

The project in Schwäbisch Gmünd is supported by state and EU funds, including 6.4 million euros from the European Regional Development Fund. It is part of the HyFIVE initiative (Hydrogen For Innovative Vehicles) and positions Schwäbisch Gmünd as the largest hydrogen manufacturer in Baden-Württemberg.

With the completion of the plant, Lhyfe is pursuing ambitious goals: The French provider is aiming for a European production capacity of 10.3 GW. These developments underline the important role that hydrogen plays as a key technology for the energy transition and could provide significant impetus for the regional and national economy.

Overall, this project not only shows progress in the production of green hydrogen, but also the region's commitment to a sustainable future. By combining innovative technology and regional resources, Schwäbisch Gmünd is setting an example for a future-oriented energy policy.
