New neurocenter: Minister visits airfield clinic in Böblingen!

On September 4, 2025, Environment Minister Thekla Walker (Greens) visited the construction site of the airfield clinic in Böblingen. She was accompanied on her tour by District Administrator Roland Bernhard and the project managing director Harald Schäfer. This project represents the largest construction project in the Böblingen district's history and is estimated to have a total cost of 800 million euros. The aim of the measure is to merge the clinics in Sindelfingen and Böblingen as well as the obstetrics departments in Leonberg and Herrenberg into a single location, which should significantly improve medical care in the region.

A particularly important aspect of the project is the planned construction of a neurocenter. At its most recent meeting, the supervisory board of Klinikverbund Südwest gGmbH decided to establish this neurocenter at the future airfield clinic. District Administrator Bernhard described this step as a significant milestone for the development of the clinic. In view of demographic change and the increasing number of patients requiring neurosurgical treatment, this step is considered necessary.

Neurocenter and maximum care

The concept for setting up the neurocenter is already available and a corresponding application has been submitted to the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Social Affairs. According to the 2030 medical concept, the expansion will transform the airfield clinic into a maximum provider with a total of 710 beds and a comprehensive range of services. This offering will include interventional radiology, nuclear medicine, surgery, internal medicine, obstetrics, pediatrics, anesthesiology and intensive care medicine.

In addition to the classic departments, there will be a medical care center as well as neurological and oncological day clinics. In order to meet the requirements for maximum care, the areas of neurosurgery and neuroradiology are integrated into the range of services. The neurocenter will consist of the departments of neurology, neurosurgery and neuroradiology in order to meet the great need for neurological and neurosurgical care in the catchment area of the Southwest Clinic Network.

Supply gap in the northeastern Black Forest

There is currently a gap in care, particularly in the northeastern Black Forest, as there are no neurosurgical clinics there. Neuroradiology will also offer added value for interventional stroke care and contribute to the national visibility of the airfield hospital. These investments are not only necessary to meet the growing number of patients, but also to sustainably strengthen the medical infrastructure in the region.

The combination of a modern clinic and specialized departments represents significant progress for healthcare in the region and reflects the clinic network's progressive plans. Further information about the developments at the Flugfeldklinikum can be found at Klinikverbund Südwest and [Kreis Böblingen].
