Raging house fire in Schönau: Over 170 firefighters on duty!

On Sunday, October 12, 2025, the fire brigade in Schönau an der Triesting, Baden district, was alerted to a devastating house fire. The alarm was raised by the Baden fire department alarm center shortly before 12:30 p.m. At this point it was initially known that there were no people in the building, which made the measures easier.

The flames quickly spread from the ground floor to the attic. Visible flames came from the roof gable and caused massive firefighting efforts. A total of up to 170 firefighters from nine different departments were on duty, including the Schönau/Triesting, Günselsdorf, Kottingbrunn, Sollenau volunteer fire departments, as well as other units from neighboring towns. The turntable ladder from the FF Stadt Bad Vöslau and the telescopic mast platform from the FF Traiskirchen Stadt were also used.

The roof covering made of metal panels with a tile look posed a particular challenge. This material made access to the source of the fire in the roof structure considerably more difficult. In addition to conventional extinguishing equipment, motorized fighter jets were also used to fight the flames. This required the operation to be carried out cooperatively and precisely in order to minimize the dangers and bring the fire under control as quickly as possible.

The fire was largely extinguished around 5 p.m., followed by extensive extinguishing work that lasted until around 7:15 p.m. However, the situation was not yet considered safe, which is why the fire department set up a fire watch overnight to prevent possible flare-ups.

Injuries and animal welfare

During the extinguishing work, a firefighter suffered a cut that was immediately treated on site. Fortunately, the resident was able to leave the building on his own. Also positive: a dog was able to be brought to safety by the emergency services. The police deployed fire investigators to clarify the exact circumstances of the fire.

Overall, the damage to the building is classified as enormous. The fire department also used modern technology to provide support: a drone with a thermal imaging camera helped to support operations management and precisely locate the source of the fire. The conventional use of traditional firefighting techniques was thus supplemented by innovative technologies, which increased the efficiency of the firefighting measures.

The intensive efforts of the firefighters, who distinguished themselves throughout the operation, once again demonstrate the commitment and professionalism of the volunteers in the region. For the citizens of Schönau a.d. Triesting has an impressive memory of the event.
