Saxony's first IMAX cinema in Leipzig: star visit and competition!
The cinema landscape in Saxony receives an exciting update: Cinestar Leipzig opened the first IMAX hall of the federal state in Petersbogen in late summer 2025. The conversion of SAAL 8 is used to create an extra -class audiovisual experience. With a spacious canvas of 218 square meters and the latest IMAX 4K laser projection, the new hall meets the highest demands. In addition, there are 12.1 sound systems calibrated every day, which will ensure an incomparable sound experience. The surcharge for IMAX performances is expected to be four euros, whereby the new hall also offers 511 different seats, including electrically adjustable lying chair with wide armrests.
Well-known guests have announced themselves to the ceremonial opening of the IMAX hall: actors and director Michael Bully Herbig, as well as the actors Rick Kavanian and Christian Tramitz are expected. At the premiere celebration on August 20, 2025, “The Canoe of the Manitu”, the first German-language film in IMAX format, is shown. The film is considered a great hope for the German film industry this year and is also presented in other formats such as Dolby Cinema and D-Box.
Unique cinema experience in Leipzig
In addition to Berlin, Leipzig is the only location in East Germany that has an IMAX hall. The demand for such a cinema experience is high, since IMAX is known for its extraordinary sharpness and visual intensity. Directors like Christopher Nolan use this special 70 millimeter film format to create impressive film art. Nolan's upcoming film “The Odyssey”, which will be released in 2026, is expected to be shown in IMAX format.
The renovation work in Cinestar Leipzig started in May 2025 and are part of a larger cinema tour that also includes imax halls at other locations. The inauguration in Leipzig is therefore an important building block in this development. During the tour, the cast members around Bully Herbig are also on site to celebrate the premiere.
For the premiere, the Leipziger Volkszeitung is raffling off five times two VIP tickets, which not only include access to the performance, but also enable a personal exchange with the actors. This competition offers fans a unique opportunity to take part in a very special cinema experience.
