The car manufacturer Porsche has announced a reduction in production at its Leipzig factory, which is necessary due to falling sales figures. From summer 2025, the Macan's body shop will be switched to one shift, followed by a reduction in assembly and paint shop areas in the fall. These measures particularly affect temporary workers, whose number will decline significantly. The adjustments are part of a larger austerity program that is expected to lead to 1,900 job cuts across the group by 2029. The reasons for these steps include weak demand, especially in China, rising costs due to the switch to electric mobility and new tariffs in the USA.
Focus on electromobility
Despite the current production stops, Leipzig remains a strategic location for Porsche, especially with regard to electromobility. On May 14, 2024, Porsche celebrated the official start of electromobility at the Leipzig plant. Around 600 million euros were invested to produce the electric Macan. The new body shop has already been built and production of the new Macan is ramping up. The new Macan is Porsche's second fully electric model after the Taycan. The company plans to deliver over 80% of new vehicles purely electrically by 2030, depending on customer demand and the development of electromobility.

The developments at Porsche in Leipzig are part of a larger movement within Saxony, which has established itself as a leading production location for fully electric automobiles. Car manufacturers such as VW, BMW and Audi produce a variety of electric vehicles in the region.
