World premiere: Sorbian culture celebrated in a new film!
On November 4, 2025, Ronny Böhme, the chairman of the “East Saxony Changes” association, asked in Schwosdorf why the name of the town Brauna is written on the town signs in both German and Sorbian, while Schwosdorf only has the German name. This inequality was the reason for Böhme's initiative to launch a project to research the Sorbian language, culture and history in the region.
To support the project, young people between the ages of nine and fourteen from Upper Lusatia and Lower Lusatia were involved in the project. Led by Matthias Schumann, a photographer and media educator, the young researchers began visiting various filming locations to learn more about the Sorbian heritage.
Media camp and film production
The idea for this project arose in 2023. A media camp took place in the summer of 2024, during which the participants visited, among others, musician Jakob Zschornak, the bilingual daycare center in Nebelschütz, the Museum of West Lusatia, Thomas Binder in the Kamenz city archives and the traditional costume tailor Petra Kupke in Räckelwitz. These filming locations offered the young reporters a practical opportunity to engage with Sorbian culture and collect materials for their film.
After a year of technical rework, the film with the title “Checker Sorbi asks: What is Sorbian?” successfully completed. The 25-minute film was shown for the first time on October 24, 2025 at 6 p.m. in the “An den drei Linden” house in Schwosdorf. In the film, the two young reporters Finja and Wanda lead through the events, while their peers were responsible for the technical aspects in the background.
Aims and distribution of the film
The film's makers have high expectations for wider distribution. They hope for support from institutions such as the Foundation for the Sorbian People, Domowina and film festivals to make the film accessible to a larger audience. It is also planned that the film will later be available worldwide via social networks.
The project was financed by the Foundation for the Sorbian People and other donors, including a contribution from “Ostsachsen Wechsel”. Ronny Böhme has already expressed the possibility of a second part of the film, depending on the availability of further funding.
The film is not only an important cultural project, but also an example for young people who are actively committed to preserving and promoting their own culture.
