Sailing fever at the 136th Travemünde Week: spectacle and whale visit!

The 136th Travemünde Week invites sailors and spectators from all over the world to the Baltic Sea from July 18th to 27th, 2025. This traditional event, which combines an exciting regatta program with a maritime festival, takes place in Travemünde and has already mobilized participants from eleven nations. The athletes compete for prestigious titles in 20 different boat classes, including three international, five German and one North German title. The Prime Minister of Schleswig-Holstein, Daniel Günther, takes over the patronage and gives the regatta starting signal with the announced “Hot the flag!” on opening day.

This year, particular attention is being paid to the Topcat catamarans, which are in the spotlight not only at the European Championships but also at the World Cup in the K1 class. The list of participants includes top teams from Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Poland. In addition to catamarans, other boat classes include Hobie 16, Dyas, J/22 and many others whose races will be held during the event.

Diverse regatta program

The regatta program is very dense and includes, among other things:

  • 21.-26. Juli: World Cup und EM Topcat K1
  • 19.-21. Juli: German Open J/22
  • 22.-25. Juli: Int. DM Varianta
  • 24.-26. Juli: Int. DM Dyas
  • 77.-27. Juli: German Open Seascape 18
  • Ranglistenregatten: Hobie 16, H-Boot, Finn-Dinghy, und mehr.

A highlight of the week is the Trave Races, which take place as commented show races in front of the promenade and offer the audience an exciting view of the regattas. In the afternoon, around 5 p.m., visitors can experience the current TW classes while entertainment is provided by expert commentators.

Title fights and competitions

Another extremely popular event is the Volksbank Rotspon Cup, in which the mayor of Lübeck competes against his colleague from Kiel. This year the duel will take place between Reinhard Meyer, the Minister for Economy, Infrastructure, Tourism and Labor of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, and the mayor of Lübeck. The competition promises an exciting showdown with the prospect of fame and the winner winning a magnum bottle of Rotspon.

Travemünde Week is not only a platform for competitive sailors, but also a celebration for the entire family. The maritime festival offers a colorful setting with stages, a large screen, various stands and a special children's and family day that invites you to enjoy the maritime atmosphere up close. Visitors have the opportunity to watch the yachts and dinghies sailing in and out of the Trave while enjoying the lively surroundings.

A special event in the run-up to Travemünde Week was the sighting of a humpback whale in the Trave in May. Whether the animal returns during the event remains to be seen and could provide additional attraction.

Overall, Travemünde Week 2025 promises to be an exciting event where competitive sports and a sociable atmosphere go hand in hand. Preparations are already in full swing and the anticipation for the spectacular event is palpable all around.
