Celebrate for unity: 35 years of freedom in Lübeck-Schlutup!

On October 3, 2025, Germany celebrates the 35th anniversary of reunification. In Lübeck-Schlutup, the former German-German border, numerous events are planned that bring people from Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania together. These events at the old border crossing not only remind of historical experiences, but also promote social cohesion in the region. NDR reports that the celebrations begin with a service in the morning.

A musical highlight will be the appearance of the Lübeck shanty choir “Möwenschiet”. In addition to these festive elements, the program includes concerts, discussions, films, plays and slam texts. In his speeches, Mayor Jan Lindenau (SPD) will remind the opening of the border in 1989 and highlight the important role of the old border crossing, which was the northernmost access of the FRG to the GDR until 1990.

Memory and commitment

The Lübeck-Schlutup association has been committed to preserving this historic place since 2004. On October 3, an announcement for the expansion of the border museum in the former customs house will also be presented. Lübeck border leads to the fact that the site closes on September 26, 2025 for a winter break, but is open on the anniversary day from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and offers tours for groups.

In addition, the day of German unity is characterized by a sustainable project: the so -called “uniform digging” aims to plant 100,000 trees. A new wedding forest is inaugurated in Büsum, with Mayor Oliver Kumbartzky (FDP) emphasizing the responsibility and importance of sustainability. In Tangstedt and Kaltenkirchen, too, several hundred trees come into the ground.

Culinary and cultural diversity

As a culinary highlight, a Wacken sausage stand is presented, and the entire ceremony program shows how diverse the celebrations are. Prime Minister Daniel Günther (CDU) emphasizes the importance of cohesion and diversity in Schleswig-Holstein and is proud of regional culture and tourism.

A special guest of honor at the central ceremony in Saarbrücken is Emmanuel Macron, the first foreign head of state in 20 years, which was invited to this ceremony. The events on October 3, 1990, when the GDR contributed to the Federal Republic and the reunification was carried out, are the focus of the festival. The history and memories of these important events are kept alive through the various activities and programs.
