Unforgettable evening with Karl-Markus Gauß: film and reading in Europark!

At the upcoming event in Leipzig, a special film event will be presented: the portrait film “Strolling is my metier” by Johannes Holzhausen. This film depicts the outstanding writer Karl-Markus Gauß and his wife Maresi on a journey from Salzburg to the edges of Europe. SN.at reports that the film shows Gauss as an attentive observer and humanitarian and allows the audience to immerse themselves in his world of thoughts.

The screening of the film will take place on Wednesday, October 22nd at 7:30 p.m. in the Oval - The Stage in Europark. After the film there will be a reading by Gauß from his text “When I almost became a film star”, followed by a conversation with the director Holzhausen and Gauß himself. A creative portrait

The documentary “Strolling is my profession” goes far beyond simply being portrayed. The director Johannes Holzhausen sees Gauß as a writer whose work has had a significant influence on him. Holzhausen is particularly impressed by Gauß’s book “In the Forest of Metropolises,” which leaves a deep emotional resonance. DimDimFilm emphasizes that Gauss' works address everyday observations and connect them to larger stories. This is also reflected in Holzhausen's film, which shows parallels between Gauß' writing style and the narrative style of telling.

The idea of “sought coincidence,” which Holzhausen emphasizes in creative work, plays a central role in Gauss’s depiction. The film follows him on various journeys, particularly through Eastern Europe and the Austrian provinces. Holzhausen also addresses the conversations between Gauss and his interlocutors, which have an essential meaning for the film.

A personal approach

A special experience for Holzhausen was meeting Gauß in Salzburg when he presented his film “The Royal Train” to him. This encounter led to a friendship, which, however, was limited in its development by the COVID-19 pandemic and the Ukraine conflict. Gauss's sudden heart attack brought a twist to the film's narrative and gave it a more serious tone.

“Strolling is my metier” is perceived as a homage to the art of slow travel and addresses the way in which literature can influence life and history. Holzhausen reflects on the importance of slow travel and strolling in different contexts, making the film a unique examination of the creative and literary processes of contemporary writer Gauss.
