Emotional farewell: Elephant mom Rani and daughter Savani leaves Leipzig!

The Leipzig Zoo says goodbye to 15-year-old elephant cow Rani and her two-year-old daughter Savani. The move to the Munich Tierpark Hellabrunn is the result of tensions within the Leipzig elephant herd, which endangered a harmonious living together. Nurses and zoo director are affected by the emotional farewell.

like thueringen24.de, rani and savani were converted in special boxes. Farewell is particularly painful for the nurse of the Leipzig Zoo because they have built up a close bond with the animals. The MDR documentary soap "Elefant, Tiger & Co." subsequently gives insight into the preparations for this transport.

challenges in the herd

The decision to move was not easy, as zoo director Prof. Jörg Junhold explains. The zoo has undergone a long and intensive process to manage the eleven -member herd of elephants. In the past few months, the tensions between Rani and other herd members have increased, which has led to more frequent separations. Rani could not be permanently integrated into the existing herd association around the Leitkuh Kewa, which accelerated the decision on the move.

The 15 -year -old Rani and her daughter are fed to a new elephant group in Hellabrunn. This consists of the animals Otto, Temi, Mangala and Gajendra, which are already living there. A special van brought the elephants to Munich safely. There, Rani and Savani are to be integrated into the existing herd to build up their own family line, such as "https://www.mdr.de/nachrichten/sachsen/leipzig-leipzig-land/zoo elefanten-muenchen-streit-herde-100.html" Class = "Source_2"> mdr.de emerges.

The transport and acclimatization

The animals are transported in the so -called protected contact, whereby the nurses do not go into the enclosure and the animals have to get into the transport boxes independently. "It is important that the animals play along so that the transport runs smoothly," explains caretaker Denny Geyer. The daily training session of the animals before transport should take their urge to move into account and make it easier for them to make the new phase of life.

familiar nurses will accompany Rani and Savani while settling in Hellabrunn and remain on site for the first few days. This measure is intended to help the elephants to settle in their new surroundings quickly.
