Skoda driver injured in collision with tram at Dittrichring in Leipzig!

On Wednesday evening a serious accident occurred on the tram tracks at Dittrichring in the heart of Leipzig. A Skoda Fabia collided with a tram on line 9 when the driver initiated a turning maneuver at 6:20 p.m. and overlooked the approaching tram. The accident happened near St. Thomas Church, where the car was dragged several meters by the collision, as tag24 reports.

Both occupants of the Skoda were injured and had to be taken to hospital. The severity of her injuries is currently unclear. Due to the accident, the vehicle was a total loss, while fortunately the passengers on the tram were uninjured. The police closed the Dittrichring to secure the scene of the accident, which led to significant traffic delays as the trams on line 9 had to be rerouted. This diversion ran via the main train station and Augustusplatz, which brought traffic to a standstill for the time being.

Traffic statistics and safety

Such accidents are part of a larger problem in German road traffic. According to destatis, a total of 2,770 people died in road traffic accidents in 2024, which represents a slight decrease compared to the previous year. The total number of injuries was around 365,000, which shows an almost constant level compared to 2023. The number of urban accidents is particularly worrying, with many injuries and fatalities occurring.

Statistics show that about 65% of those injured and 57% of those who died died in accidents in urban areas and on rural roads. These figures highlight the need to pay attention to traffic and safety conditions, particularly in urban areas. The police have now started an investigation into the incident at Dittrichring.

After some disruptions, the reintegration of traffic went smoothly again, so that trams and car traffic gradually continued to run normally, as lvz confirmed. It remains to be hoped that such incidents can be avoided in the future through appropriate security measures.
