New police station opened: protests on Eisenbahnstrasse!
On Wednesday, June 25, 2025, a new police station was opened on Eisenbahnstrasse in Leipzig, which is in Saxony's only weapons ban zone. This zone was established in November 2018 to improve the security situation in an area considered a crime hotspot. The station, which is located in a former vegetable shop on the corner of Hermann-Liebmann-Straße, is staffed by three officers who are available on site from Monday to Thursday.
The opening of the police station was not without controversy, as a demonstration took place in the afternoon in which around 20 to 30 people held a banner protesting against the new police station. An open day was also organized for the opening, offering a children's program and discussions with police officers. A prevention team also provided information about burglary protection, grand tricks and current fraud schemes, which underlines the efforts to improve security.
Weapons prohibition zone background
The weapons ban zone on Eisenbahnstrasse allows the police to carry out checks regardless of suspicion and to prohibit the carrying of certain weapons. Despite these regulations, a study by the University of Leipzig shows that the zone had little impact on general crime. However, residents reported that serious conflicts have largely been absent since the facility was established. Residents want more preventive measures against drug trafficking, littering and road hooliganism, highlighting the need for a police post in the area.
The new police station will be part of a comprehensive action plan by the city of Leipzig to abolish the weapons ban zone. The establishment of the station was not without controversy, as there were attacks on the new police station before it opened and there were delays in moving in due to the search for property. Nevertheless, those responsible are confident that the police station can contribute to improving the security situation.
