Leipzig's Green Kayak: Paddling for environmental protection - free in summer!
In the summer of 2025, nature lovers and environmentalists can take advantage of a unique leisure offer in Leipzig. The “Green Kayak” project, which has been active in the city since May 2024, allows participants to kayak for free while helping to clean up trash in the waters. The campaign, which is led by Birgit Paul, combines environmental protection with recreational fun and is aimed at locals and tourists.
The concept of the “Green Kayak” comes from two environmental activists from Copenhagen. In the city of Leipzig, 1,335 people have collected almost two tons of garbage since the campaign began. The waste collected includes not only plastic bags and bottles, but also metal parts and even carpets. The kayaks are financed by donations and are available at various locations in Leipzig.
Free paddling with an environmental contribution
The offer includes a two-hour paddling tour during which participants collect trash from the waters. The kayaks can be rented at three boat rental shops in Leipzig: at the Leipzig city harbor, at the Klingerweg boat rental shop and at the Herold boat shop and rental shop. Bookings are made via the international “GreenKayak” app, which is also used to document the amount of waste collected. Participants can dispose of their collected waste on site in integrated bins on board and on land in bins provided at boat rentals.
The “Green Kayak” project was initiated by the Kommunalwohl-Ökonomie Mitteldeutschland e.V. and brings together not only environmentalists, but also school classes, trainees and refugees. For groups of more than eight people, there is also the option of booking additional boats at low cost.
