Biotechnology has developed into one of the fastest growing industries in Leipzig and is attracting more and more companies and workers. In the Bio City Leipzig There are over 50 companies and research institutes based there, including the company Vita 34, which stores umbilical cord blood and tissue in nitrogen-cooled tanks. Biotechnology now employs over 4,000 people in the region, and a total of around 5,300 jobs in more than 200 companies have been created in this area.
Leipzig is pursuing ambitious goals. By 2035, the city wants to become one of the top three German locations for life sciences. This biotechnology offensive is not only perceived as a model of success in Saxony, but also as pointing the way for future developments in the industry. The Free State of Saxony has invested over one billion euros in biotechnology over the last 25 years.
A center of innovation
At the heart of this development is the BioCity Leipzig, which covers a total area of 20,000 square meters. Since 2003, companies, biotechnology-oriented professorships and non-university institutions have been offering a platform for collaboration and innovation here. The modern laboratory and office space is specifically tailored to the needs of start-ups and young companies in the life sciences sector.
The infrastructure in the Bio City is state-of-the-art. All laboratories comply with S1/S2 standards and are equipped with modern cooling capacities as well as fresh air and draft cooling systems. Rental spaces starting from 30 square meters are also available at prices of 6 to 8 euros per square meter.

Research and Development
Bio City Leipzig is also home to established companies such as c-LEcta, which develops enzyme products for the pharmaceutical and food industries. Medical Forge offers support for young companies and RedZinc is working on a telemedicine platform for monitoring vital signs. In the immediate vicinity is the Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology, which has three GMP cleanroom facilities that are used for the production of new therapeutic approaches.
The commitment to biotechnology is reflected not only in new companies, but also in a future-oriented network that promotes the exchange of knowledge and technologies. Through these initiatives, Leipzig remains on track to achieve its ambitious goals in biotechnology and life sciences.
