Rousing concert in the Gewandhaus: Strauss, Franck and more!
On November 14, 2025 at 7:30 p.m. a symphony concert by the “Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy” University of Music and Theater will take place in the Gewandhaus in Leipzig. This highlight is presented under the direction of Prof. Matthias Foremny and offers an exciting program that combines the works of famous composers. The soloist of the evening is Yijea Han, who is studying in the master class for oboe with Prof. Nick Deutsch.
The performances include Richard Strauss' tone poem “Don Juan” op. 20, which was written between 1888 and 1889 and was inspired by the poets Nikolaus Lenau and Paul Heyse. Strauss, a leading representative of classical music, was born on June 11, 1864 in Munich. His impressive life's work reflects the transition from late romanticism to modernity and continues to influence many composers today. The premiere of “Don Juan” took place on November 13, 1889 in Weimar and was a great success for the young composer. Wikipedia reports that he played a significant role in the music world and began composing as a child.
Diverse program
The concert will also include Bernd Alois Zimmermann's Concerto for Oboe and Small Orchestra from 1952. This work was premiered at the Donaueschinger Musiktage and bears the signature of a composer who is known for his opera “The Soldiers”. Zimmermann, who became a composition professor in Cologne in 1965, has expanded the boundaries of classical music with his work.
The third major work will be César Franck's Symphony in D minor. This important composition, completed in 1888, had its premiere on February 17, 1889 and initially received only limited attention. But over time it became recognized as one of the late romantic Franck's masterpieces. Franck's work includes some of his most important works from the last 15 years of his life.
