Fake police officers: Seniors in Saxony lose thousands of euros!
In Saxony, fraudulent calls from alleged police officers are increasing, especially against older people. An 81-year-old man from Großenhain in the Meißen district fell victim to such a scam and lost around 20,000 euros. The fraudster called the pensioner, pretended to be a police officer and claimed that his banknotes needed to be checked. The senior handed the money over to two people collecting it, but only later realized the fraud. In the past few days, the Chemnitz police have received more than a dozen tips about similar incidents, which point to the unscrupulous activities of fraudsters who want to gain access to money and valuables. The police strongly advise you to hang up immediately if you receive suspicious calls and not to engage in the conversation, reports Blick.de.
Another incident occurred in Wurzen, where a 77-year-old man was also robbed by a fake police officer. The incident took place on Thursday night. The perpetrator called the senior citizen, warned him about alleged burglars and offered to keep his valuables safe. At around 1:40 a.m., the fake police officer appeared at the 77-year-old's apartment, locked him in a room and stole cash and valuables worth over 10,000 euros. The senior was finally able to free himself and informed the real police officers, who are now investigating this case for usurpation of authority, deprivation of liberty and theft. There have also been similar scams by fake police officers recently in Leipzig and the districts of Northern Saxony and Leipzig n-tv.
The police warn of further cases of fraud
The police authorities in Saxony are concerned about the increase in attempted fraud by supposed police officers. The perpetrators often use a sophisticated trick by telling credible stories about a criminal case in order to persuade their victims to hand over money and valuables. This scam has increased significantly in the last few days, with the police receiving more than a dozen tips in a short space of time. Seniors are particularly often affected and find themselves in a helpless position due to the emotional pressure caused by such calls.
Comprehensive action against these scams is necessary to protect other seniors from such perfidious schemes. The police appeal to always remain critical and, if in doubt, to contact the real authorities. Remember that police officers never ask for money from citizens or conduct security checks over the phone.
