Budgie offspring at Leipzig Zoo: A colorful spectacle awaits visitors!

Leipzig Zoo is attracting numerous visitors from Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia, Bavaria and Brandenburg during the current holiday season. This period is traditionally considered the busiest time of the year, with many families discovering the zoo's attractions. Zoo boss Jörg Junhold announced exciting news about the budgie oasis, which was recently redesigned at the zoo, in a podcast on July 20, 2025. The aviary for the popular birds covers around 100 square meters and offers an extraordinary experience for visitors.

What is particularly interesting is the fact that budgies, also known as Melopsittacus undulatus, are social breeders and their breeding season lasts all year round. This adaptation ensures that the audience always has the opportunity to observe young animals. There are currently around 50 fledged young birds that are active in the walk-in budgie oasis opposite the koala house. Other young birds remain in nest boxes and will make their first attempts to fly in the near future.

Young talent and visitor experiences

Visitors are welcome to watch the small birds take their first flights, offering a special interaction with the wildlife. The redesign of the budgie oasis, which has existed at the zoo since 2018, has proven successful and offers the birds a natural environment that is both for their well-being and for the enjoyment of visitors. The opportunity to get up close and personal with the birds is part of the experience the zoo offers its guests.

In addition to the budgies, the zoo also has offspring of white-nosed coatis. The female Nina gave birth to her young on May 15, 2025 and, together with another female, looks after the offspring in a mother's room at the rear. The father of the young animals, Carlos, is already seven years old and can be seen together with two other conspecifics in the display area of the facility. However, it will still be some time before the young animals become visible to visitors to the Pantanal facility.

The current highlights at Leipzig Zoo show how diverse and eventful the animal world is and underline the importance of nature conservation and education through such interactive experiences. The summer months are an exciting time not only for the animals, but also for the visitors.
