New traffic-calmed area in front of the Wilhelm Wander School from July!
From Monday, July 21st, the area in front of the Wilhelm Wander School in Schulze-Delitzsch-Strasse is permanently closed to through traffic. This measure aims to ensure the security of elementary school students and to prevent sneaking in the district. Politics thus pursue the goal of improving the quality of stay in the residential area. This is reported by the Leipziger Internet Zeitung . For this reason, new bollards are set at the Neustädter Markt. These bollards enable pedestrians and cyclists to benefit from a quieter traffic situation. The redesign of the lounge in front of the school is still planned for this year, with elements such as colored areas, bouncy games, green plants and benches are being developed in cooperation with the children.
a comprehensive concept for traffic calming
This measure is part of a major initiative for traffic calming in the area north of Eisenbahnstrasse, which has been implemented since September 2024. Pollers in Hermann-Liebmann-Straße and Benningsenstrasse are to further reduce through traffic. In addition, a pilot project in Hildegardstrasse is expanded with another lock on the corner to Ludwigstrasse. The traders in Hildegardstrasse, Elisabethstraße and Idastraße were set up charging and delivery zones, while 16 short-term parking spaces were created to secure the parking spaces for residents. This information also comes from the Leipziger Internet Zeitung .
The measures for traffic calming are part of the super block project in Leipzig, which began in September 2024 and provides for an intersection of Hermann-Liebmann-Straße with Benningsenstrasse. The city council provided around 110,000 euros last year to increase the quality of life in the quarter concerned. This information also confirmed the mdr website .
criticism and feedback
Despite the positive goals of the initiative, there are also critical feedback. An online petition entitled "Stop Superblocks" was signed by almost 1,200 people in early 2024. The CDU also took up the topic in the election campaign and advertised with posters that say: "We stop the super block". This shows that there are concerns about the impairments for shops and parking facilities, such as the MDR-WEBSITE reported.
The city of Leipzig plans to record the effects of the new measures on dealers, gastronomy and parking seekers this year and to carry out basic evaluations of the traffic concept. These steps are crucial to find a balanced solution between traffic safety and the needs of the residents.
