Emotional explosion: Modern Color and Scowl conquer the Thekla!
On May 8, 2025, Californian band Modern Color performed alongside Scowl at Thekla in Bristol. Loud Noizze Both bands offered an impressive live performance that captivated the audience. Modern Color, consisting of four members, held their first concert on a boat. Their set included nine songs from the albums “There Goes the Dream” and “From the Leaves of Your Garden.” The performance was described as emotional, clear and powerful, with frontman Fleming Valenzuela enthusiastically addressing the audience and eliciting a positive reaction.
Scowl, another up-and-coming band in the hardcore and alt-rock genres, followed with an energetic 15-song set heavily influenced by their new album Are We All Angels. The performance started explosively and immediately challenged the audience; Kat Moss encouraged the audience to do a circle pit. The audience moved to the beat of the music while the band's sound was described as raw, intentional and urgent. Despite mixed reactions to the new album, the live performance remained powerful, with audience members vigorously demanding an encore.
Powerful live presence and new album
Scowl recently released their new album “Are We All Angels” via Dead Oceans. This release also marked their debut on the late night television show "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert", where they performed their song "Tonight (I'm Afraid)". Forever Loud reported. The album showcases an expanded sonic palette while the band has retained their authenticity and emotional depth. Latest single “Fantasy” also garnered attention and reflects the band’s creative progression.
Both bands, Modern Color and Scowl, show a strong stage presence and attract new fans with their dynamic sound. Modern Color and Scowl will continue touring in the near future after performing in Bristol. This tour will include Scowl's first performances in Mexico as well as a UK and EU tour where they will perform again with Modern Color.
