Silent film magic in a vintage car: Traveling cinema inspires Leipzig!

Summer in Leipzig shines in cinematic splendor as the traveling cinema conquers its streets. In a nostalgic vintage fire engine from 1969, also known as the “Vice of the Night”, the traveling cinema offers a unique experience. The musician Tobias Rank controls the vehicle, which functions as a mobile cinema stage, and travels with it from place to place to present silent film classics on a specially constructed screen. He is accompanied by other artists who play live music and provide acoustic accompaniment to the films. The dialogues of silent films are shown on the screen in written form, immersing the audience in the action.

The traveling cinema has been active since 1999 and has now developed a loyal fan base in Germany. It uses historical 16mm projection technology for projection and shows a diverse repertoire of film genres, including slapstick, monumental and experimental films. Each location for the film screenings offers a nostalgic atmosphere that is reminiscent of the pioneering times of cinema and can quickly be transformed into an open-air cinema. This combination of unique technology and atmospheric implementation makes every performance special.

Events and dates

This year the focus is on the “Silent Film Days on the Wart” in Clara Zetkin Park and runs until June 3rd. As an annual stop, the hill called “Warze” always attracts numerous film enthusiasts. But the journey continues even after June: Further dates in Leipzig are September 12th at the Nordost Natural Pool, October 31st at the Heilandskirche as part of “Cinema Noir” and November 7th at the Grassi Museum.

The traveling cinema was awarded the German Silent Film Prize for 2023, which underlines the high status and recognition of the mobile cinema initiative. Viewers can look forward to an unforgettable experience that both stimulates the senses and keeps the memory of a bygone era alive.
