Seehausen's Library: A day for education and creativity on October 24th!

The city library in Seehausen looks to the future with confidence. Doreen Neumann, the head of the library, is optimistic, despite the challenges that digitalization brings with it. On October 24, 2025, the library will celebrate the 30th Libraries Day, a day of action that was founded in 1995 by Richard von Weizsäcker. This date also commemorates the founding of the first German city library in Großenhain, Saxony, in 1828. This year, the importance of libraries as places of education, culture and creative development is once again clearly highlighted.

“Our library is visited by all population groups, especially many children,” explains Neumann. Two new library users were registered this week, another sign that interest in these institutions continues. The library in Seehausen offers a successful mix of digital and analog media and is open to visitors from Monday to Friday.

Diverse offers and events

On October 24th from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. there will be fall crafts with natural materials and paper in the library. Neumann also highlights some new non-fiction books that have just been added to the library. These include works such as “Getting older is like being young, only worse” by Susanne Fröhlich and Constanze Kleis as well as “Dementia – targeted prevention, holistic understanding, loving support” by Prof. Dr. Dietrich Grönemeyer. The book “Save Childhood” by Maja Lunde is of particular interest to young families. Another highlight is “The Book of Hope” by Jane Goodall, which was purchased after her recent death.

However, the role of libraries goes beyond providing literature. They are also an important part of digital society. On June 27, 2025, Digital Day will take place nationwide under the motto “Digital Democracy: Have a say. Help shape. Participate.” Over 180 events and workshops in various libraries will provide insights into digital offerings and services. Boersenblatt reports on offers such as smartphone consultation hours for seniors and workshops on the use of AI tools. These initiatives are designed to promote media literacy and enable people to actively participate in the digital society.

Antje Theise, the federal chairwoman of the German Library Association, emphasizes how important it is to support libraries politically and structurally in order to consolidate their role in digital education and strengthening democratic processes. Supporting libraries is crucial to promoting digital democracy and informed civic consciousness.
