Preparations for the reading summer in Saxony-Anhalt are in full swing. In Seehausen, the city library will take part in this important summer holiday reading campaign for the first time on Monday, June 30th. City library director Doreen Neumann emphasizes how crucial early reading support is for primary school children. The campaign, which is carried out in collaboration with schools, the state administration office and the state of Saxony-Anhalt, is intended to motivate children to read during the summer holidays and improve their reading skills. The primary school teachers distributed book wish lists to the children in advance to determine their reading wishes. At a ceremonial opening on Thursday morning, the children were able to cut the ribbon in front of the new books. Around 160 children had the opportunity to discover the new books. During the reading summer, the books are available exclusively to participating children until August 8th. All children can then access the new purchases.
Reading summer XXL
In the midst of these events, the Seehäuser Library also takes part in the Reading Summer XXL, which is considered the largest holiday reading campaign by the public libraries in Saxony-Anhalt. This successful initiative was launched 15 years ago and has continued to develop ever since. In 2024, 6,651 children and young people nationwide took part in the campaign, which means an increase of 10% compared to the previous year sachsen-anhalt.app reported.
A total of 18,365 books were read by young readers during the last campaign. In addition to Seehausen, other new libraries such as Rottlerode, Diesdorf and Annaburg are also taking part this year. In other places, such as Merseburg, various events are offered under the motto “Reading Summer # Galaxy Magic”. This includes activities such as drawing comics, escape games and book presentations.
The children in Seehausen have the chance to borrow at least two books during the summer holidays, read them and then rate their reading experiences. There is also a quiz with exciting prizes, which is intended to further stimulate the participating children's love of reading. Neumann not only praised the primary school students' love of reading, but also the honorable commitment of the teachers who promote reading fever in their classes.
