Bremen in flood stress: Dike inspection ensures our safety!

The annual dyke shows will take place in Bremen on November 6, 2025 and will be led by Michael Dierks, managing director of the Bremen Dike Association. The first of five dyke shows covers a route of 16 kilometers that leads from the Ochtum barrage to Hohentorshafen. During the tours, the dikes in the districts of Huchting, Strom, Neustadt and Teerhof are also checked to ensure the condition of the flood protection. Today's route leads over the Hasenbüren dike, past the tunnel construction site and the sewage treatment plant.

In addition to Dierks, the participants in the dike show also include dike captain Ralf Hagens, an employee of the dike association, a representative of the Senator for the Environment, Climate and Science and volunteer dike jurors. These levee jurors are responsible for monitoring the condition of the levees in their area of responsibility. Today's dyke inspection will have windy and rainy weather conditions, which are traditionally considered ideal for such inspections.

Current challenges and measures

The construction site for the motorway tunnel between Seehausen and Stahlwerkufer, which is being observed as part of the dike exhibition, is also receiving particular attention. Small cracks in the asphalt pavement of the dike defense path have been identified, but are not serious and can be repaired. As part of these reviews, the new Rablinghausen dike project, which is nearing completion, will also be examined.

The new dike in Rablinghausen, a district of Woltmershausen, requires raising and strengthening over a length of around 2 kilometers. These measures are part of the general plan for coastal protection, which envisages raising the top of the dike by 50 centimeters by 2025 to ensure protection against storm surges. In particular, global warming, sea level rise and more frequent storm surges require more urgent protective measures.

Financing and deals

The total costs for the new Rablinghauser dike amount to around 11 million euros, with 70 percent coming from federal funds and 30 percent from state funds. The remaining work includes, among other things, sowing lawns, planting trees and designing a disc golf course. The dike is expected to be completed and opened to the public by the end of November 2025.

The project implementation in Rablinghausen is structured into three construction phases in order to minimize restrictions on use for residents and visitors. The first section is scheduled to be largely completed in 2024, while the remaining sections and remaining work are scheduled to be completed by 2026. These measures are crucial to protect residents and infrastructure against future flood events.

Overall, these dike shows and the associated commitment of the city and the responsible institutions are of utmost importance in order to continuously improve flood protection in Bremen and adapt it to the current climatic challenges.
