Blaue-Land-Bus: Record numbers and enthusiasm in Murnau!

The newly introduced Blaue Land bus has quickly established itself in the Murnau region. The bus service, which began operations on November 1, 2024, is organized by the operating company Omobi, based in Neu-Egling. In the first ten months, from November 2024 to September 2025, the Blaue Land bus already transported 78,324 passengers. A notable increase was recorded in July 2025, where the highest occupancy was recorded at 8,771 passengers.

The high level of acceptance of the transport offering is also reflected in customer satisfaction of 4.9 out of 5 points. Murnau records the most intensive use of the system. Nevertheless, there are peak periods when 15-20% of demand cannot be met, indicating the need for further capacity planning.

Financial challenges and public response

However, the financial conditions of the project are challenging. The deficit amounts to up to 300,000 euros, as the fares only cover 23% of the operating costs. Despite this financial burden, the project receives support from grants from municipalities and funding programs, which reduce the need for grants. There are currently no plans to increase the fleet, which is currently operated with five fully electric Mercedes nine-seaters.

The project is initially scheduled to run for four years, although there is already interest in similar transport systems in other valleys in the district. The aim is to integrate it into the tariffs of the Munich Transport and Tariff Association (MVV), but this is not yet ready for decision.

Overall, it can be seen that the Blaue Land bus has received a positive response from the population and is an important addition to local public transport in Murnau. Whether the existing challenges can be overcome remains to be seen, but passenger numbers and positive customer satisfaction indicate great potential for the future.
