Teenager injured: E-scooter accident in Leipzig caused chaos!

On Tuesday afternoon, a serious traffic accident occurred in the Schönefeld-Ost district of Leipzig, which sent three teenagers to the hospital. At around 2 p.m., an e-scooter collided with a car, leading to a dramatic rescue operation. The 18-year-old driver of an Opel, who was driving north, disregarded the right of way of the e-scooter, which was crossing the street from the west on the pedestrian crossing with a 16-year-old driver and a 15-year-old pillion passenger.

The collision resulted in both teenagers falling and sustaining injuries, while the female driver was left in shock. The estimated material damage is around 3,000 euros, which adds additional stress to the incident. The police authorities immediately drew attention to the dangers in road traffic and pointed out the increasing number of accidents involving e-scooters recently.

Increasing accident rates and road safety

The topic of road safety is particularly relevant due to the recent incident. According to reports from eMobility Insiders The increase in accidents is primarily attributed to the growing number of e-scooters. In 2023, e-scooter accidents accounted for around 0.6 percent of all traffic accidents in Lower Saxony. In comparison, bicycle accidents, which account for around six percent, are still significantly higher.

Road safety is particularly concerning as 446 cyclists lost their lives on roads in 2023. There was impressively little change in e-scooter accidents under the influence of alcohol or drugs: 151 accidents in 2023 compared to 157 in the previous year.

The police remain vigilant in view of the increasing number of users and the associated accidents. Similarly high numbers of accidents involving e-scooters under the influence of alcohol or drugs are expected in 2024. These developments result in the need to consistently promote road safety and provide educational work.
