Vandalism at the Watzmann refuge: mountain rescue service sounds the alarm!

On the weekend before last, the door to the Ramsau mountain rescue service's locked emergency storage room in the refuge at Watzmann-Hocheck was broken down. This repeated vandalism problem represents a serious concern for the mountain rescue service and the safety of the emergency services. According to the BRK Berchtesgadener Land district association, fortunately nothing was stolen from the room in which material for bad weather operations is stored. The mountain rescue service and a police officer from the Alpine Task Force (AEG) were immediately on site and filed a report.

The door has since been temporarily repaired and can now be locked again. Michael Renner, head of operations at the Ramsau mountain rescue service, points out that the refuge is not only affected by vandalism, but is also in a generally poor condition. For example, an important wooden step that was used as a fireplace was damaged.

Challenges caused by vandalism

Renner reports repeated problems with vandalism and littering in the refuge. He actively looks for solutions and talks to everyone involved about how the refuge can be preserved in the long term. Drastic measures may be necessary to protect the fabric of the shelter. The refuge at Watzmann-Hocheck is the only way to find shelter from the weather conditions on the ridge crossing between Watzmannhaus and Wimbachgrieshütte, which underlines its importance.

In addition, members from various professional groups are involved, including electricians and computer scientists.
