Progress on the Charles Bridge: Partial opening for pedestrians from Monday!

In Leipzig-Plagwitz, work on the new construction of the Charles Bridge has been making considerable progress since 2023. Pedestrians will be able to use the new bridge from Monday, October 19, 2025. This is designed as a pillarless construction to better counteract flood events. Pedestrians will be able to walk across the northern walkway of the new bridge, while the temporary bridge built during construction will finally be dismantled as it is no longer needed. Cyclists are still encouraged to push in the construction area as the cleared part of the bridge does not provide enough space for them.

The old Charles Bridge, which was built in 1900, was in a critical condition, which is why new construction was now urgently needed. However, the original completion date of September 2025 cannot be met; the new bridge is not expected to open until February 2026. The reason for delays is delivery bottlenecks for the required steel arches. The completion of the sidewalks and the assembly of the steel arches are not planned until February 2025. L-iz reports that The steel arches will be assembled using a mobile crane from February 10, 2025.

Progress on the construction site

Current progress on the site shows that the deck on the north side of the new bridge, including the caps and railings, has already been completed. In addition, the necessary supply lines were relocated back to the new building. The Leipzig waterworks also benefit from the construction work, as they are renovating a combined sewer and drinking water pipes that are over 100 years old. These renovation measures are essential for the future safety and functionality of the infrastructure in Leipzig.

The costs for the new construction of the Charles Bridge amount to around 8.9 million euros, with the Leipzig group investing around 1.3 million euros in the project. Motorists had to be rerouted at the Nonnenstrasse/Holbeinstrasse intersection during the construction phase, and bus line 74 is currently not serving some stops. Day24 reports that The intersection redesign work will also include sidewalk extensions to improve pedestrian safety.

The construction work on the Charles Bridge is not only a step towards modern traffic management in Leipzig, but it also contributes to the renewal of important infrastructure.
