Reconstruction of Merseburger Straße: Safety offensive for pedestrians starts!

On Monday, October 27, 2025, the renovation of the pedestrian zone will begin on Merseburger Straße in Leipzig-Plagwitz. The aim of this measure is to increase safety for pedestrians and send a clear signal to drivers. This redesign includes the entrances at the corner of Karl-Heine-Strasse and Aurelienstrasse, where the transverse sidewalks will be drawn through to make pedestrian priority more clear. The total cost of the work is around 75,000 euros, and completion of the work is scheduled for the end of 2025.

The section of Merseburger Straße was declared a pedestrian zone in September 2024. Parked cars and through traffic are no longer allowed in this zone, although deliveries to shops and restaurants remain possible. Short-term parking spaces for visitors and nursing services are also marked on Aurelienstrasse. Friedemann Goerl, pedestrian traffic manager for the city of Leipzig, explains that this area was often misused as a thoroughfare, which makes the new regulation even more urgent. The renovation will be carried out gradually in order not to place an undue burden on both residents and businesses. The first construction phase includes a four-week closure of the intersection with Aurelienstrasse, followed by work on the corner of Karl-Heine-Strasse. Once the construction work is completed, the entrance will be fully open to delivery traffic again LVZ reports.

The new pedestrian zone is not only a response to current needs, but also part of the city of Leipzig's pedestrian development plan. As part of this plan, the city is conducting an online survey to collect information from citizens about problem areas in pedestrian traffic. The survey is voluntary and anonymous, and registration in the participation portal is not required. Citizens have the opportunity to actively contribute to improving the pedestrian transport network in Leipzig through their feedback. This ensures that data protection issues are also treated accordingly buerger participation.sachsen.de reports.
