Rat plague in Paunsdorf: City responds to citizen complaints!
The rat infestation in the Leipzig district of Paunsdorf has now reached alarming proportions and is causing increasing concern among residents. According to information from L-IZ The situation of rodents will be discussed at the council meeting. Environmental Mayor Heiko Rosenthal reports that there are around four rats for every German, which puts the problem in a larger context.
The issue has been discussed in the East City District Advisory Board for two years now, with citizens increasingly making complaints about the rat infestation. The city district advisory board has submitted an application to combat the rat problem, which addresses the large rat populations at several locations in Paunsdorf. Despite the measures taken by housing companies, success has so far remained elusive. There are great fears that the rat nests will continue to spread and other parts of the city will be affected.
Causes and perception of the problem
The Paunsdorf neighborhood management is now demanding a thorough inspection of public areas in order to document the rat problem in detail. The rat infestation is primarily taken seriously by housing developers, but is also widespread in urban areas. MDR reports that many residents complain about scary walks home in the evening, especially near trash receptacles. A resident describes that she is unsettled on her evening walks because rats are often seen around the containers.
Martin Haug, a local resident, has had haunting experiences and discovered rats under the hood of his car several times. He tries to keep these unwanted guests away by regularly checking his vehicles. The problem is also confirmed by other residents, for example by a senior citizen who observed rats in playgrounds - places where people actually eat and drink.
City council decides on measures
The discussion in the city council also revolves around citizens' responsibility with regard to waste disposal. City councilor Beate Ehms emphasizes that improper waste disposal is a major cause of the rat infestation. Environmental Mayor Rosenthal has shown understanding for the problem, but warns of the possible negative effects of certain measures.
In order to effectively combat the rat infestation, the council decided to set up a working group. This working group is intended to comprehensively examine the situation and develop recommendations for action. In addition to combating the rat plague, education about proper waste disposal and separation should also be a central point. The council meeting supports the concerns of the city district advisory board with a clear majority, which is a step in the right direction.
