New police station on Eisenbahnstraße: No more weapons ban zone!

Eisenbahnstrasse in Leipzig, a district long notorious for its high crime rate, is facing significant change. From June 25, 2025, a new police station will begin operations, located on the corner of Hermann-Liebmann-Straße. This is the first step in an action plan to increase security in the problem area. [Image] reports that the station will be staffed by three officers who will be on site from Monday to Thursday and will be available to residents as contact persons.

The opening of the police station comes at the same time as the announced lifting of the weapons ban zone, which has existed since November 5, 2018. This zone, which extends around the Eisenbahnstrasse, was originally intended to help improve the security situation. But a study by the University of Leipzig turned out to be sobering: it showed that the weapons ban zone had little influence on the general level of crime. Most residents instead want preventive measures against drug trafficking, traffic hooliganism and littering. [Volksstimme] confirms that the planned measures include an increased police presence through pedestrian and bicycle patrols as well as the installation of a speed camera on Eisenbahnstrasse.

Background to the security situation

The Eisenbahnstrasse is not only known for drug trafficking and littering, but also for serious violent crimes. In May 2023, a mass brawl involving a machete took place, and two months later a 39-year-old man was stabbed. Such incidents have alarmed residents, who have been calling for increased police presence and prevention for years. They hope that the new guard and the measures announced will increase the feeling of security in the neighborhood. The end date of the weapons ban zone remains unknown, but police chief René Demmler expressed the hope that it will be lifted quickly [image].

Before it opened, the police station had been attacked several times, including an incident in May when about 80 masked people threw stones at the building. This illustrates the difficult situation and the skepticism that prevails among the population. Nevertheless, the measures announced by the city and the police are a step towards improvements. Mayor Burkhard Jung (SPD) is to present the package of measures to the Saxon Ministry of the Interior.

To celebrate this transition, there will be an opening day from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., at which Police Chief René Demmler will also be present. The new police station should not only be a sign of presence, but also a symbol of hope for a safe and livable environment on Eisenbahnstrasse.
