New speed camera in Mölkau: Police sound the alarm against speeding!

Residents of Mölkau are increasingly reporting about the through traffic in their residential area. In response, the city of Leipzig has installed a new speed camera column, which has been set up on Sommerfelder Straße/Zweinaundorfer Straße in the direction of Engelsdorfer Straße since July 9th and 10th. This measure is intended to help ensure compliance with speed limits and monitoring stop regulations at red lights. However, just one day after its installation, the speed camera column was daubed with red paint, which suggests that it may have been controversially accepted by the population. This is what Tag24 reports about the current situation in Leipzig.

The city is responding to residents' complaints and is planning further traffic control measures. However, there are also concerns about the safety of pedestrians, wheelchair users and strollers due to the column's position on the sidewalk. The city administration assures that sufficient space for passers-by was taken into account when planning the measuring point.

Technical background of the speed camera column

The installation of modern speed camera towers is part of a larger road safety concept. There are currently around 5,000 speed cameras available in Germany, which work in different forms and with different technologies, as t-online.de reports. Most measuring devices are designed so that they can measure in both directions. Various techniques are used to precisely determine the speed of vehicles.

Modern devices, for example, use three measuring wires that run across the road and generate electricity when they are driven over. At the same time, photographic evidence is often taken to document speeding. Slowly braking in front of a speed camera is often not only dangerous to traffic, but can also be ineffective, as measuring devices can register exceedances several hundred meters in front of the column. Some models are even able to measure speeds at a range of up to 1,000 meters.

However, the correct function of the speed camera columns is not always guaranteed. Incorrect measurements can be caused by inaccurate installation angles or damaged road surfaces. Drivers have the opportunity to object to the measurement within 14 days of receiving a fine if they have doubts about its accuracy.

Conclusion: A controversial measure for more security

The introduction of the new speed camera column in Mölkau is an expression of the city of Leipzig's efforts to increase traffic safety and respond to the concerns of residents. However, it remains to be seen whether the technical design and location of the column will have the desired effect on the traffic situation or whether it will remain controversial.
