Lok Leipzig fights for ascent: fans demand reform of the rules!

The regional league season 2024/25 is characterized by intensive discussions about the promotion from the regional league to the 3rd division. In particular, the promotion games, which take place between the 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig and TSV Havelse, come into view. The games that are played in a back and forth format took place on May 28th and June 1, 2025. In the past and gate equality, extension and penalty shootout were used in the past to determine the promoted team. MDR reports that Lok-Leipzig's goalkeeper Andreas Naumann expressed grief about this painful situation .

The emotional reactions are not surprising because the fans have a clear longing for higher -class football. Naumann emphasized the strong emotions associated with football, while Djamal Ziane from Lokomotive Leipzig criticized the decision -makers. In the current regulations, he sees a gap between the sports officials and the passionate football fans. According to Kicker, the regulation has only triggered fourth league from five regional league masters, a lot of displeasure .

climb and reform requirement

The resentment is supported by the initiative of 17 of the 18 clubs of the Regionalliga relay northeast, which require a basic league reform. This is intended to ensure that all masters will automatically rise in the future. The existing regulation that came into force on the 2020/2021 season was generally considered inadequate . This rule stipulates that the masters of the regional west and southwest rise directly, while the other two promotion places between the regional north, northeast and Bavaria are allocated.

Toni Wachsmuth, the sports director of Lokomotive Leipzig, further gets to the point. He calls for an urgently needed revision of the regulation, which in her view no longer makes any sense. It remains to be seen whether and as at the DFB Bundestag in autumn 2025 will be decided on a reform and whether this takes the concerns of the club representatives and fans seriously. Naumann hopes that this grievance will be perceived by those interested in football .

Especially at a time when football is bound by football and passion, the committed clubs demand a fair chance of promotion. The complex regulations and the associated uncertainty create tensions and discourage not only the players, but also the loyal fans.
