Cologne resident runs 147 kilometers for women's shelter - fundraising goal almost reached!

Last weekend, Robin Pfleger showed a remarkable commitment to social causes by running 147 kilometers around the Decksteiner Weiher in a challenging fundraising campaign. The run took place on Saturday morning at 7 a.m. near the Geißbockheim and lasted a total of 22 hours. The aim of this extraordinary effort was to collect donations for the Cologne women's shelter. Pfleger was based on the Backyard Ultra competition from the USA, in which participants have to complete laps of 6.706 kilometers within 24 hours. However, in order to achieve the necessary distance, Pfleger shifted the circuit around the pond, as this did not quite correspond to the required length.

During the run, Pfleger usually needed three quarters of an hour per lap and was actively supported by friends. A friend had even set up an aid station and brought a hammock to give him a little break during the long hours of running. The night between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. became particularly challenging when Pfleger was alone and finally had to give up because of an approaching thunderstorm.

Fund for the Cologne women's shelter

Robin Pfleger's previous experiences with ultra marathons had already enabled him to collect donations for social projects. A previous run netted him €60, while his current social media campaign raised a remarkable €2,600. Pfleger plans to increase the amount to 3,000 euros. The donations collected will benefit the sponsoring association of the Cologne women's shelter, Women Helping Women. Pfleger emphasizes the importance of supporting local institutions and setting a clear accent for feminism. One of his next goals is the symbolic handover of a check, where he would also like to find out about the work of the women's shelter.

Global challenges and solidarity

The importance of such fundraising campaigns is also apparent against the backdrop of global challenges that are exacerbated by climate change, conflicts and natural disasters. The corona pandemic has increased the hunger and poverty problem in many Welthungerhilfe projects. Targeted donations are intended to provide not only help for acute crises, such as in India, but also long-term support for projects in other affected regions such as Mali, Liberia and Burundi. The virtual fundraising run makes an important contribution to alleviating hardship and systematically helping people in crisis situations. [Welthungerhilfe] ensures that the funds are used where they are needed most.

Given Robin Pfleger's outstanding performance and the continued globalization of relief efforts, it is clear how important it is to support local and global initiatives to enable progress in the fight against hunger and injustice.
