Experience Dieter Appelt: leadership and film evening in Altenburg!

On October 9, 2025, an important exhibition dedicated to the renowned artist Dieter Appelt begins in the Prinzenpalais of the Altenburg Residential Palace. Under the title “Dieter Appelt – Gerhard Altenbourg Prize 2025” the artist's works from different creative phases will be shown. Dr. Benjamin Rux, co-curator of the exhibition, will lead the tour at 11 a.m., during which visitors can immerse themselves in Appelt's diverse artistic approaches to nature, myth and transience. Participation in the tour costs 4 euros (3 euros reduced) and offers the opportunity to get to know key works better, including the important works “Augenturm” and “Waldrandabhörung”. Abg-net reports.

The exhibition, which is supported by the Art and Culture Foundation of Sparkasse Altenburger Land, runs until November 2, 2025. The board of trustees recognizes Appelt's important role in European artistic creation and the connection of his "scores" to the works of Gerhard Altenbourg. The exhibition is accompanied by the studioAKTIV program, which invites visitors to take part, including projects such as the “Tower Building in Altenburg”. ABG info added.

Film evening and award ceremony

On the same day, a film evening will take place in the Paul Gustavus House at 7 p.m. There are short films for actions and performances by Dieter Appelt, but also by other influential artists such as Michael Morgner, Marina Abramović and Joseph Beuys. Entry to this film evening is free and is a valuable opportunity to experience Appel's artistic work from a different perspective.

Dieter Appelt will also be awarded the Gerhard Altenbourg Prize on August 24, 2025, which is worth 10,000 euros. This honor highlights not only his artistic achievements, but also his continuous innovation in the creative process. His most recent works include the “Scores,” in which musical concepts are translated into visual representations, and the work “Waldrandabhörung,” developed over decades, which merges treetops into an optical score.

As part of the special exhibition, school classes also get their money's worth and can take part in projects such as “Very close to it”. Public tours are planned on additional dates such as August 28th, September 7th and November 2nd, 2025. Further events include a workshop evening on September 3rd and an artist talk on October 30th with Michael Morgner. Please note that the exhibition rooms are not barrier-free.

These events offer both art lovers and the general public the opportunity to experience the unique works of one of the most important contemporary artists in Germany. Dieter Appelt, who turned 90 in March, remains an inspiring example of creative creativity and cultural enrichment in old age.
