Altenburg's Lindenau Museum: New delays-reopening 2028 in danger!
In the Altenburger Land, the Lindenau Museum remains the most important and most expensive construction site in the region. The construction work that has been suspended since the beginning of 2023 is expected to be exposed to at least by autumn 2023. This emerges from current reports that provide detailed information on the challenges of the museum project.
The construction activity at the Lindenau Museum is characterized by considerable delays. After the Bundestag approved 48 million euros for the renovation and expansion of the museum in 2018, the building was cleared in 2020. The interim solution in the Altenburger City Center was set up, while the construction work only began in autumn 2022, almost three years after the eviction. This delay led to a nationwide outcry, since the first draft did not meet expectations and subsequent changes caused additional costs. The estimated total costs rose to 55 million euros, but without increasing the funding from the federal and free state.
financial uncertainty and new challenges
The museum director Roland Krischke faces a financial challenge. Despite his efforts to find alternative sources of money, they have so far been unsuccessful. There are currently no guaranteed federal funds for 2025 and 2026, which delays the provision of further funding from the Thuringian state budget. So far, the previous work has been financed by a state of debt of the country in the amount of 10 million euros, which is now exhausted.
District Administrator Uwe Melzer demands faster provision of the funds, since the reopening of the museum could theoretically shift to 2028. The uncertainty about the future use of the stable increases the already tense situation. Melzer emphasizes the need to secure and use the existing capacities.
planned exhibitions in the interim
Despite the structural challenges, both the Lindenau and the Castle Museum are trying to offer small exhibitions from 2025 in order to keep art and culture in the region. An exhibition on Ursula Jobst in Kunstgasse is planned in the interim of the Lindenau Museum. The castle museum will open a new exhibition on Altenburg Magdalenstift on June 24th.In addition, the Lindenau Museum plans to interlock its structures more closely with the castle museum. A competition for the construction of the “new coache” was initiated in order to find a suitable solution for the depots and restoration workshops. There are even considerations to use the old playing card factory as a depot, but this can still be clarified in the feasibility study.
The problems related to financing and progress in construction work remain turbulent. It will continue to be hoped that the next funding can be secured soon to prevent a construction stop and successfully lead the Lindenau Museum into its new era.
like the lvz.de and the MDR, the reopening of the Lindenau Museum remains a central concern for the cultural scene of the region, even if you are not realistic at the end of 2027 or early 2028 is.
