Leipzig in heat chaos: heat wave, full schools and RBL transfers!
Leipzig is facing a heat wave that will bring temperatures of up to 38 degrees Celsius. The forecasts in advance indicate that 33 degrees on Tuesday and 38 degrees on Wednesday can be expected in the coming days. Such temperatures are a big problem, especially for a city that came last in Saxony in the heat check. Leipzig gets particularly hot during hot days, highlighting the need for drinking fountains, outdoor pools and shaded areas for citizens. These facilities will be particularly important as outdoor pools expect a high volume of visitors. However, the wine festival on Wednesday will take place as planned to offer citizens a welcome change in the heat. This is reported by the LVZ.
Parallel to the climatic challenges, RB Leipzig begins its summer transfer phase, which lasts until September 1st. Those responsible are planning a personnel change in all parts of the team. This gives the region and football fans reason to hope for new impulses in the game.
School problems and heat action plan
The rising temperatures are not the only pressing problem for Leipzig. While the city is working on a heat action plan to counter the consequences of the warm days, the number of students is also steadily increasing. Almost 63,000 students are currently enrolled, leading to overcrowding in many schools. Almost every second school has security deficiencies. The pressure to renovate is correspondingly high.
To address these challenges, the city council has approved an updated school development plan. This plan is intended to address capacity shortages and excesses and also provide solutions for student safety. The heat action plan was also drawn up on April 16, 2025, which includes measures to adapt to the heat in schools, daycare centers and public transport. It was also decided to create a heat protection manager position in order to systematically address these issues. A motion to install additional drinking fountains was accepted, and the Left and the Greens are calling for at least one new drinking fountain per year and district. The heat action plan measures will apply until the end of 2026, and the city plans to provide four million euros for additional assistance over the next two years, funded from the climate change adaptation budget. This information comes from the LIZ.
The increasing number of students and the associated problems highlight the urgent measures that are needed in the city. The evaluation and updating of the heat action plan should take place in the future with the participation of citizens.
