Karli is celebrating until autumn: construction sites provide new party fun!
In Leipzig, current construction sites and school construction projects are causing lively discussions and activities in the city. The focus is particularly on Karl-Liebknecht-Straße, also known as “Karli”, as tracks have been replaced and pipes renovated here since the end of June. The closure of the street has led to an increase in the so-called “cornering” of young people on Südplatz. Hundreds celebrate there in the evenings, making the place a new party location. The residents, on the other hand, complain about noise, wild peeing and litter. If traffic starts moving again in the fall, the hustle and bustle could quickly come to an end, reports the LVZ.
Another explosive issue is the closure of the Dow cracker in Böhlen, which affects 550 jobs. District Administrator Henry Graichen is calling for the location to be opened up to third parties and the search for new interested parties, while mayors in the region fear negative effects on other companies and local taxes.
News about schools and daycare centers
Things are also becoming turbulent in the school sector. The planned primary school on Hans-Beimler-Straße in Möckern will cost 49 million euros, significantly more expensive than originally estimated, as the costs have increased from 32 million euros. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2026 and will replace the old school, which must continue to operate despite difficult conditions. Meanwhile, the parents of Kita Nordstrasse are expressing concern about the impending closure of their facility due to technical deficiencies. This could become concrete at the end of the summer holidays, which also raises concerns that other daycare centers could be closed for similar reasons.
A significant modernization project concerns the Rückmarsdorf primary school, which is planned to be both modernized and expanded. The total costs are around 25.8 million euros, with around 4 million euros being provided as funding by the Free State of Saxony. The rest is borne by the city of Leipzig. Construction work is scheduled to begin in early 2026. Until then, an interim building made of containers will be built for the students and will be erected in 2025. This transition is necessary because the students will be accommodated in a container just a few hundred meters away during the modernization work, while the sports halls can still be used.
Cultural highlight in Leipzig
On Wednesday, Robbie Williams will perform in the Red Bull Arena, which is a cultural highlight for many Leipzig residents. Admission is only possible via the Eventim app; printed tickets will not be accepted. The concert begins at 6:30 p.m. with a support act, while Williams is scheduled to take the stage between 7:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. With the upcoming event, Leipzig is once again showing its liveliness and cultural diversity.
